The ONE campaign is a coalition of Americans joining together to make poverty history. More than two-million people have signed the ONE Campaign Declaration calling on the US government to make changes in policy affecting developing countries. Among the changes ONE is calling for is trade reform to help Africa and other the poor countries beat AIDS and extreme poverty.
Edun ONE T-Shirts
The Edun ONE T-shirt is being sold to raise awareness of the ONE campaign and to raise funds. For each shirt sold, Edun donates $10 to ALAFA. Edun has already given ALAFA almost $600 000. Representatives from Edun visited Lesotho in November 2006 to hand over a cheque for $276 330. A second hand-over ceremony was held on Monday 19 November 2007 at Wonder Garments in Maseru, where One t-shirts are made, at which ALAFA received another cheque for $310 000.
The ONE shirts are being made for Edun at a Lesotho factory using African cotton. This is in keeping with the company’s belief that job creation is more important than charity, and that trade not aid is the way for Africa to lift itself out of poverty.
EDUN is an ethical clothing line created by Ali Hewson and U2 frontman Bono with New York clothing designer Rogan Gregory. Launched in 2005, the company is using its clout to highlight the issue of sustainable employment in the fashion world. The company applies the principles of corporate social responsibility and is committed to improving the lives of the workers in its supply chain.
