The enthusiasm of the international business and donor community to join the fight against HIV and AIDS in the Lesotho apparel sector has been exceptional.

Department for International Development
(United Kingdom
)

Initial funding for the research, implementation and launch of the programme came from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). DFID is providing a further £2.55 million to ensure the overall project roll out. The DFID funding is making it possible for ALAFA to hire staff and manage the roll out of the programme to reach 90% of the workforce over the next two years. It will also be used for other activities, including developing the organisational infrastructure to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Pact is providing funding to improve ALAFA's prevention services. The objectives are to promote behavior change among male factory workers; promote PMTCT services and practices among female factory workers (mothers and potential mothers); and promote HIV-prevention behaviour change strategies among young factory workers under the age of 25. ALAFA will develop additional tools and materials for the peer educator curriculum to more effectively reach these audiences. Men's clubs and women's clubs will be established, and youth-oriented activities incorporated into prevention. The grant runs from November 2010 for 42 months.
